Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
A Church of Joy!
Making Christ Known"
On April 23, 1950 ground breaking for the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church occurred.
The church was a white wood clad structure built on 2 acres of land and inside there was wood paneling, stained glass windows, green carpet & folding chairs.
The first service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd was held on September 17, 1950.
There were one-hundred eleven Charter Members. Pastor Herbert A. Hanson was the founding Pastor, 1950 – 1952.
Good Shepherd grew quickly with some of its members consisting of families of returning G.I.s settling in Levittown.
In the mid-1950s membership was at its peak with 595 confirmed members and 700 children in Sunday School.
The congregation was ethnically diverse with families of Polish, Italian, Irish, Chinese, Hispanic, German & Scandinavian backgrounds.
Good Shepherd provided a meeting place for many community groups, as it still does today.
In 1963, an extension was put on the church to enlarge the Sunday School room and the Sanctuary. The entrance door was moved as was the altar,
In 1976, Pastor John W. Harmon arrived at Good Shepherd. He served 1976 to 2004.
In September of 1980, Hempstead Town Councilman Joseph Mondello presented a Proclamation commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Levittown to Pastor Harmon.
The Good Shepherd Mission Statement, "Knowing Christ, and Making Christ Known" is seen in its mission projects, in Pastoral care and in educational programs.
Good Shepherd is truly a church that has grown and prospered as,
"We (the church) have shared together the blessings of God." Philippians 1:7
